How to Ground a Generator When Camping

A camping trip without a generator can be awful as they provide you with the electric power you need while camping. With all the ease a portable generator provides, it’s important to ground your Generator correctly for safety. But how to ground a generator when camping?

A well-grounded generator provides an extra layer of safety while you are out camping. The camping generators can act as backups when your electricity supply is cut off and power many electrical devices simultaneously.

Portable generators are usually electric power hubs. When we talk about electric power generators, it comes with many risk factors. So, it is very important to keep safety measures in mind. Grounding the Generator properly is one of the most important safety aspects. 

Most portable generators come with built-in grounding ability; how would I know whether my Generator needs to be grounded? 

For this purpose, you need to contact the supplier you purchased the Generator.   

I know grounding an RV generator seems daunting, but to eliminate the risk of electrocution and the safety of your RV equipment, you have to go for it. After all, safety comes first. 

Grounding is a technique to earth your camping generator. Or, in simple words, to reduce the risk of electrocution, connect the electrical circuit to the ground – make them safe to use.

The right tools in hand are the first step to grounding your Generator properly. Here is the list of tools you should keep with yourself:

Copper Rod

It will help you ground your portable generators. The length of the grounding rod should be four ft. Grabbing a longer copper grounding rod will help you establish a more sturdy grounding connection. It would help if you hammered the copper rod into the ground on tough terrains. 

Copper Wire

Copper wire stripping will allow you to connect the copper grounding rod. In this way, the copper cable will become conductive electrical wire. 

Copper Grounding Wire

It would help if you had a copper grounding wire to connect the grounding pin to your portable Generator. The amount of wire depends upon the Generator’s distance from the buried ground rod. 

Pliers

It would help if you had a pair of pliers to connect the copper wire and the grounding rod well. You are done by simply twisting the copper wire near the grounding rod. 

Hammer

You should keep a hammer with you, especially if you’re camping near or on tough terrains. It will help you ground the copper rod. 

Wire Strippers

The wire strippers are needed if your Generator contains an insulated grounding wire. To ground your portable Generator, you need to strip off the insulation on either end. The wire strippers make it easy by connecting the copper, grounding, and Generator. 

Wrench

The main job of a wrench is to loosen or tighten nuts. To ground a generator, you will need a wrench multiple times. To strip the grounding wire, establish a safe connection with a generator, and more. 

Steps for Grounding a Generator Safely

Now that you have the right tools, it’s time to find how to ground a portable generator safely.

Step 1: Bury the Copper Grounding Rod into the Generator 

First, you need to hammer the copper rod into the ground. Sometimes, the soil is soft enough that you can pull the copper rod into the ground without hammering. Ideally, hammer it 8ft down. The deeper you go, the more grounded your Generator will be. 

For hard ground, the surface drizzles some water and then hammers it. If the terrain is rocky, try to dig it at a different angle for proper grounding but make sure you don’t hit it at a 90-degree angle. 

Step 2 – Stripping on the Copper Wire  

The next step is to strip the ground wire. While stripping the wire, you must be very careful, so the inner of the wire won’t get damaged. So, you have to get the wire stripper out and disconnect the copper wire from both ends. While doing so, ensure you have removed enough insulation so that it can be twisted around the grounding rod and easily attached to the portable Generator. 

Step 3 – Wrapping the Wire with a Copper Ground Rod

In the third step, you must wrap one side of the ground wire with a copper rod. Take one end of the stripper copper wire and carefully twist it around the grounding rod with your pliers. By doing so, you can establish electrical contact between the grounding wire and the earthed rod.

Step 4 – Attach Stripped Copper Wire to the Generator

Now it’s time to attach the stripped copper wire tightly to the Generator and finish grounding your portable Generator properly. Take the other end of your stripper wire and attach it to your Generator. Then it would help if you took off the grounding bolt. You can use a wrench to loosen up the grounding bolt and tightly secure the wire around it. Once you wrap the copper wire tightly around the grounding bolt, tighten the nut back. 

You are all done! You have successfully grounded your portable Generator.

What Happens if You Don’t Ground Your Generator?

When the current flows from the electrical circuit, it always looks for an endpoint where it can dissipate the energy and return to the ground.

In an RV electrical system, the current usually flows from the hot wires to the neutral ones. The same is the case with portable generators.

Let’s suppose the electricity starts flowing across the path, offering minimal resistance. What will you do in that situation? Of course, you don’t want to live in fear of being caught by the short circuit. While camping, this would get you in the worst situation, like catching fire and other hazardous situations.

So, grounding your Generator is very important. It will provide a direct backup path that will present the least resistance.

As discussed earlier, grounding a generator is a technique to direct the backup path to the ground. This would help you stay safe even if there is electrical energy leakage.

  • Attach Stripped Copper Wire to the Generator – take the other end of your stripper wire and attach it to your Generator. Don’t forget to secure the copper wire around the grounding bolt tightly.
